One of the most important step in optimizing your WordPress site for SEO is adding it to Google Search Console (formerly Google Webmaster Tools).

Google Search Console offers specific webmaster tools to help website owners monitor and maintain their search presence and rankings.

How to easily add your WordPress site to Google Search Console

What is Google Search Console?

Google Search Console is a free tool offered by Google to help website owners monitor their website’s presence in Google search results.

It helps you track search rankings along with keeping you updated about site errors, security issues, and indexing issues that may affect your website’s search performance.

If you are serious about growing your website, then you need to add it to Google webmaster tools from day one.

That being, let’s take a look at how to easily add your site to Google Search Console.

Adding Your WordPress Site to Google Search Console

First, you need to visit the Google Search Console website and click on the ‘Start Now’ button.

Next, you’ll need to sign in with your Google / Gmail account.

Once logged in, you’ll be asked to enter your website URL.

There are two methods for site verification: domain name or URL prefix. We recommend the URL prefix method because it is more flexible.

Keep in mind that Google considers an HTTP and HTTPS as two different protocols. It also considers and as two different websites.

You need to enter the correct website URL used by WordPress.

If you are unsure, then there is an easy way to find out the exact URL you need to enter. Simply login to your WordPress admin area and go to Settings » General page.

There you will see your website’s URL in the site address field.

After entering your correct website address in Google webmaster tools setup wizard, click on the ‘Continue’ button to go to the next step.

Now, you’ll be asked to verify ownership of your website. There are several ways to do that, but we will show the HTML tag method because it is the easiest one.

Click on the HTML tag to expand it and then copy the code inside it.

Now, you need to add this Google site verification meta tag in WordPress, so Google can verify that you are the owner of the website.

Most WordPress tutorials will guide you to just edit the header.php file in your WordPress theme and add the code just above the tag.

However, we don’t recommend this method because if you update or change your theme, then the HTML tag will disappear.

Google periodically checks for the HTML tag and will disable your access to the site data in the search console if it cannot find the verification tag.

Here is how to make sure that Google can always verify your ownership of the website.

First, you need to install and activate the Insert Headers and Footers plugin. For more details, see our step by step guide on how to install a WordPress plugin.

Upon activation, go to Settings » Insert Headers and Footers page and paste the Google HTML tag code you copied earlier inside the ‘Scripts in Header’ box.

Don’t forget to click on the ‘Save’ button to store your changes.

You can now go back to Google Search Console settings and click on the ‘Verify’ button.

Google Search Console will now look for the HTML tag in your website code and will show you a success message.

Note: If you don’t see a success message, then you need to clear your WordPress cache. This will ensure that Google can fetch the latest version of your website.

That’s all. You have successfully added your site to the Google Search Console (Webmaster tools). You can now click on the ‘Go to Property’ link to visit your Google Search Console dashboard.

Add XML Sitemap to Google Search Console

An XML sitemap is a file that lists all your website content in XML format, so search engines like Google can easily discover and index your content.

The easiest way to add an XML sitemap to your WordPress website is by installing and activating the Yoast SEO plugin.

Upon activation, go to SEO » General and switch to the ‘Features’ tab. From here, you need to scroll down to the ‘XML Sitemap’ option and make sure that it is turned on.

Next, you need to get the XML sitemap link. Simply click on the question mark icon next to the XML sitemap option, and you will see a link to your XML sitemap.

Clicking on the link will take you to your XML sitemap. From there, you can just copy the URL from your browser’s address bar.

Adblocking or ad filtering is a popular technique through which advertisements on the internet are blocked or removed so it doesn’t affect the browsing experience of the user.

So if your visitor uses this technique, there’s no way that they’ll see the advertisements you display on your site. By doing so, your users will definitely have an uninterrupted browsing experience but your website revenue and strategy for growth will face a serious dent. Method #1. Detecting and Targeting AdBlocking Users Using OptinMonster

Next, you’ll see a new screen where you need to name your campaign. If you’re managing multiple websites you can also select the one where you want to display this campaign. Once done hit the Start Building tab to continue.

You’ll now be on your drag and drop builder where you can design the campaign. Click on the Yes/No option (as shown in the screenshot) to yes by clicking on it and then clicking on the activate button.

Now in the text section click on the elements individually and edit them. You can add an image too if you want.

To add block you can use the add block button on top. Once done designing your campaign, go to the Display Rules tab next to the Design button. Under the first rule you need to select visitor’s adblock is enabled.

After that scroll down and set your settings to any page.

Your campaign is almost ready to go live. The last step is to publish it. So go to the Publish button at the top. You’ll see a new screen appear. On this page toggle the status button to live.

Now go back to the WordPress dashboard and click on OptinMonster » Campaigns. You’ll see your campaign appear here. Click on the Edit output settings link.

Now make sure that you’ve checked the Enable campaign on site option.

And that’s it. Your campaign should start appearing on sites of users who have enabled adblockers.

Method #2. Detecting and Targeting AdBlocking Users with AdSanity

Adsanity is a brilliant ad management plugin for WordPress that also offers an ad detection feature with an addon. You’ll see several add-ons here. Look for the Ad Block Detection addon and click on theMore Info tab. You’ll now be redirected to a new page where you can purchase a copy of the addon.

Once the addon is installed in your site, go to Adsanity » Settings » Addons. Here in the first field add posts and pages so that the warning is shown throughout the site. In the next option, choose Warning Modal. Now add the message you want to display to Adblock users landing on your site. Finally, under the Warning Mode option, select the Mandatory field.

“Learn From Mistakes,” They Say. Our Business and Marketing Mistakes

Our Business and Marketing Mistakes, Broken Sites, Not Fun Stuff

We don’t like to make business / marketing mistakes, but we’re really, really good at them. You might even say that if we weren’t so good at them, we might never have made it this far. Here’s why:

This might come as a surprise to regular readers of these transparency reports because they know that we’re doing alright as a business. However, it was our big, bad mistakes that helped us reach the heights of alright.

We’ve managed to thrive despite making all the business and marketing mistakes “they” tell you not to make. We broke thousands of sites with one update, and we’ve thrown thousands of ad dollars into the wind. Once, we even took the give out of the giveaway. And, that’s not to mention all of the shattered dreams.

Through all of these mistakes, we kept learning and avoided repeating them (too often). Today, I’m going to lift the curtain and share the biggest ones with you. I hope that you’ll enjoy this, but, most of all, I hope that this post will help you avoid making similar mistakes yourself.

Let the show begin:

Mistake #1: Dude, where’s my semicolon?

We’ll start at the very top with the boss man, who managed to make one of the biggest mistakes ever. One thing you should know about our beloved leader is that he likes to do things fast. So fast, that he considers the “move fast and break things” philosophy to be a touch too conservative to be a viable business model.

Ionut decided to make a quick edit to a theme. Zerif Lite was active on over two hundred thousand sites. Still, since the edit was tiny, he decided to jump in and do it immediately.

Ionut pushed the update … which was missing one semicolon.

The result? Thousands and thousands of fatal errors all over the world.

When he talks about the error, he admits it affected *many* people. However, no one knows precisely how many sites “we” broke with this basic, and some might say classic, coding mistake. We just knew we needed to prevent it from happening again.

Unfortunately, we didn’t learn how to stop it entirely. We just learned a few things about workflow and how to limit the impact of our mistakes.

💡 What did we learn from this mistake?

  1. The first step was to protect the production branch. We keep it in an undisclosed location far from Ionut’s hands.
  2. The second step was to shift our workflow towards automatic deployment using Travis to handle the testing.

Mistake #2: Every dream ends with a ticket

Finding a way to help your users go from frustrated to fulfilled is challenging. If you don’t deliver a good mix of delicacy and tact then it is possible to ruin someone’s dream. Unfortunately, we’ve done this a few times.

For one, take the story of a motivational speaker who came to us when he wanted to build a members-only section on his site. You have to work really hard to destroy the confidence of a motivational speaker. In this case, you can see how badly we handled things.

Not directing a customer to a helpful article is one of our business mistakes.

This user gave up on WordPress altogether and switched to Wix.

Another time, we sent 5-7 replies to help a different user using Hestia Free. She wanted to change her mobile fonts. We made a catalog of errors in that ticket too because we didn’t understand the problem or fix it, before directing her towards the forums.

Unfortunately, the customer didn’t go and repeat her question on the forum. Worse yet, she didn’t do much more with her site, which looks abandoned.

In both of these examples, we lost customers because we didn’t do a search through our own knowledge base.

💡 What did we learn from these customer support mistakes?

  1. Restrict and redirect: We now provide free theme users with a tutorial before we redirect them to the WordPress forums. We help them get started without impacting the service to our Pro users.
  2. Clearer support policy: We wrote a new support policy that makes it clear to both customers and the support team what we provide and how to locate alternatives.

Mistake #3: We’re all take and no give

Everyone is looking for traction when they release a new product, and we have failed in a few different ways.

We experimented with, and messed up, ads on some big platforms: CSS Tricks (that was me), Google Ads, and Facebook are the ones that come to mind. If you like throwing money into the wind, then ads are a good option.

If you like throwing your time into the wind then outreach is for you. Spend time researching influencers, crafting emails, and then wait, wait, wait for a (no) reply.

In short, these marketing mistakes taught us that getting the product into the users’ hands was more important than building awareness with a celebrity endorsement. For that reason, we decided to give away yearly licenses to the Pro add-on for our theme, Neve. But … we messed that up too.

Although we spent time getting the elements right, we missed one step. We had a dazzling landing page and prepared posts for all of the right Facebook groups. We even mentioned it in a special edition of our newsletter. But, we never tested the purchase workflow.

Initially, things went well. A lot of people jumped on the plans, but only a few of them received the login details.

Facebook users let us know that we had a problem with our giveaway: it didn't work.

Those who received the login email couldn’t log in.

And if they could log in, they couldn’t see the product.

Users who got a free license for Neve found that they couldn't download the product.

Those who could see the product noticed that the license expired in 24 hours.

And so, all of these users were forced to wait for a manual update to their account.

Eventually, we were able to correct all of the issues even while simultaneously getting hammered on Facebook. However, very few of the remarks involved trolling because we explained the situation, apologized, and updated users when their licenses were working.

As a result, we came out of the situation looking good, feeling terrible, but ready to launch a bigger, more successful deal on AppSumo.

💡 How can you avoid the anti-giveaway?

  1. Test everything: This shouldn’t require any explanation, but we skipped some steps when setting up the giveaway. We should have tested the entire process from beginning to end with some idea on how to stress test our purchase flow.
  2. Be honest with users: People can be pretty chill when they know you are working on their problem. In other words, tell them what happened, let them know the fix is coming, and then let them know when everything is working.

Mistake #4: Take our business mistakes, please

We have pivoted on how we package our themes and plugins quite a few times. Initially, we offered single themes for purchase; however, we changed this to deliver packages that contained all of the themes and a few plugins.

For single-site users, having thirty themes was not that useful. If you like a theme and you want to buy it, then you want to buy *it*. If you’re building a corporate website then having access to a range of niche themes isn’t helpful.

This brings us to the second point, not all of the themes were equally good. A lot of them were average. Users didn’t want an odds and ends package. They expected to have one theme that worked out of the box without a bunch of other products that had a variety of issues.

At other times, users didn’t realize they were buying a package and then couldn’t find the theme they purchased among the dozens of themes they received. When your business and marketing mistakes bring legal threats and PayPal disputes, then you know something is wrong…


This was all over a bunch of themes and plugins that were not bringing in any independent income. So, we “retired” the useless ones, went back to basics by offering just three themes with starter sites that provided multiple designs that were up-to-date, fast, and beautiful.

💡 What did we learn from these business mistakes:

  1. Find out what your customers want: Comb through all the data you have. Everything from conversions through A-B tests to support tickets will tell you what your potential customers want. Don’t be too stubborn when it comes to making changes.
  2. Sometimes you have to kill off old products: Spending too much time maintaining products creates negative cash flow. We decided to focus development hours on products that were making money and retire the ones that were most cost than benefit.

Mistake #5: Bad reviews, we’ve had a few

Some of our themes have been quite popular. Zelle aka. Zerif was active on hundreds of thousands of sites during its prime. As it got older, we decided to provide a new flagship theme, Hestia. When developing the theme, we tried something different and built it using a UI kit rather than from scratch. This challenge helped us in many ways but a few errors slipped in along the way:

How we code our theme led to some awful product experiences

When it came to customization, even people who knew code had some trouble getting it working.

We found that people would dig into the code. Break some things. Fix some things. Finally, they’d get their site working right. But then there’d be one more thing. And that would be the thing that would bring all of their frustrations out. Like this reviewer who had a lot of trouble getting Hestia to do what he wanted it to do.

The coding in your theme is the absolute worst. It is utterly ridiculous. And your support doesn’t know anything. I regret purchasing your theme.

One of the reasons why we hate this review is that it is a fair complaint which developed after a few problems. In his case, it was the cart page that was the tipping point. The header did not have a consistent design.

The user didn’t like it, and he couldn’t fix it.

We agreed that the title was a problem and shared code to fix it. The issue was reported on GitHub and an update was released a week later. By the time we closed the ticket, the user was grateful and ordered us to have a great weekend.

  1. Report issues and suggestions: We changed the way we communicate with our developers. We now collect all the suggestions and add them to the product’s GitHub repository.
  2. Listen to feedback and integrate it: We integrated the code suggestions when we refactored Hestia.

Conclusion: We can outrun even the worst business and marketing mistakes

Reading a list like this must make you feel pretty good, right? We all make mistakes, and businesses can even bounce back and thrive despite them.

And, I am sure that’s not the end of our business or marketing mistakes. I’m sure we will continue making new ones.

The key for us has been admitting to them and taking advantage of the lessons they had for us. This helped us avoid repeating the same mistakes again and again.

Because, the truth is, you can only break your users’ sites once or twice before they run for cover. Who could blame them?
