Beginner’s Guide on How to Add Business Hours in WordPress

Do you want to display your business hours on your WordPress site? Displaying your open hours on your website can help customers make an appointment or plan their visit accordingly. In this article, we will show you how to add your business opening hours in WordPress.

Upon activation, the plugin will add a new menu item labeled Business Profile in your WordPress admin menu. Go ahead and click on it, so you can go to the plugin’s settings page.

The plugin allows you to show your business information in schema.org rich snippet format. This means that search engines like Google can read, understand, and use this information in their search results.

First you need to select your business type. By default, the plugin will use organization. You can change that if you need.

After that you need to provide your business name and address. You can also use Google Maps to show the address.

Simply click on the ‘Retrieve map coordinates’ link and the plugin will fetch coordinates using the address you entered.

You will need to get a Google Maps API Key to use the Google Maps feature. The instructions on how to get one for your website is included in the plugin.

Next, you need to enter your phone number and select the contact page. A contact page can be any page on your WordPress site that has a contact form.

You can also add your business email address. But this would mean that you will get more spam on that email address.

Finally, under the ‘Schedule’ section you can select your business hours. Simply check the boxes for the days you are open and then select opening hours.

Business Profile plugin allows you to display opening hours and your business profile in two ways.

The first option is to use the widget. Simply go to Appearance » Widgets page and add the ‘Contact Card’ widget to a sidebar.

Next, check the box next to the items you want to display on your website.

Don’t forget to click on the save button to store your widget settings.

You can now visit your website to see the widget showing your business information and opening hours.

The second option is to use shortcode [contact-card] in any WordPress post or page. Adding it will show your complete business profile.

You can also use the shortcode with attributes to show particular items from your business profile. For example:

[contact-card show_opening_hours=1]

If you are running a single author website, then you can easily avoid this by simply changing the title and removing the number from WordPress URLs. However, it’s a lot harder to keep track of when you are running a multi-author WordPress site.

But don’t worry, the solution we’re going to cover is going to help you prevent duplicate post titles and advise your authors to change them.

First thing you need to do is install and activate the Unique Title Checker plugin. For more details, see our step by step guide on how to install a WordPress plugin.

The plugin works out of the box, and there are no settings for you to configure.

Simply go to Posts » Add New and enter a unique post title. The plugin will check the post title and notify you that it is unique, and you are good to go.

You can now try again by creating another new post. This time use a title that you have already used for another post.

The plugin will notify you that this title is already been used.

It will not stop you from editing the post, saving it, or even publishing it.

However, the warning will let you and other authors on your website know that they should use an alternate title.

Method 1: Using Re-add Text Underline and Justify Plugin

First thing you need to do is install and activate the Re-add Text Underline and Justify plugin. For more details, see our step by step guide on how to install a WordPress plugin.

Upon activation, you need to visit Settings » Writing page to configure the plugin settings.

The plugin comes with two options to choose from.

You can add the underline and justify text buttons, so they will appear in the second row of the post editor buttons.

Alternatively, you can choose to re-add buttons and rearrange. This will put underline and justify text buttons in the same position as they were before WordPress 4.7.

Don’t forget to click on the save changes button to store your settings.

You can now visit Posts » Add New page, and you will find underline and justify text buttons added back to the post editor.

Method 2: TinyMCE Advanced Plugin

This method allows you to do a lot more than just adding the underline and justify text buttons. You can add custom styles, add missing buttons, and even create your own buttons.

Upon activation, you need to visit Settings » TinyMCE Advanced page to configure plugin settings.

Now you need to drag and drop underline and justify text buttons from ‘Unused Buttons’ box to the post editor.

You can now create a new post or edit an existing one. You will notice that the default WordPress post editor is replaced by the TinyMCE Advanced editor.

If you are new to WordPress theme development and want to customize your theme, then you need to learn which template files in your theme you need to edit. In this article, we will show you how to easily find which files to edit in WordPress theme.

WordPress themes control how your website looks to your users. Each theme contains several template files which control the appearance of a particular section or page in your WordPress theme.

For example, single.php file controls the appearance of single posts on your website. It is not the only file to do that.

If your theme does not have a single.php file, then WordPress will look for alternate templates like index.php to display the page.

Most beginners are not familiar with template hierarchy in WordPress. This makes it harder for them to figure out which files to edit when they want to customize their themes.

Having said that, let’s see how to easily find out which files to edit in your WordPress theme.

First thing you need to do is install and activate the What The File plugin. For more details, see our step by step guide on how to install a WordPress plugin.

The plugin works out of the box, and there are no settings for you to configure.

Upon activation, you need to visit your website and you will notice a new ‘What the file’ menu in WordPress admin bar.

Now you need to just take your mouse over to the menu item, and it will display a drop down menu listing the template files used to display this page.

Clicking on the file name will take you to the default WordPress file editor where you can edit that particular file.

However, we do not recommend using WordPress file editor to edit theme files because there is no undo option. If you accidentally lock yourself out of your website, then you would have to use a FTP client. That’s why we always using a FTP client and plain text editor to edit your files.

Making direct changes to your WordPress theme is also a bad idea. Those changes will disappear when you update your theme.

If you are just adding some CSS, then you can add it as custom CSS in WordPress. For all other changes you should create a child theme.

‘What The File plugin’ can help you locate the theme files that you need to copy and edit in your child theme.

Note: The menu item added by the plugin in the admin bar will be visible to all logged in users, and it has a link to an external site. You should only use this plugin in development environment.

Using your own customized short URL improves brand recognition among your users. It also allows you to create shorter URLs for easy sharing on social platforms. Most importantly, you can easily track these URLs to see how many clicks you got when you shared a URL.

Having said that, let’s see how to create your own branded customized short urls in WordPress.

Step 1: Buy a Short URL or Short Domain Name

Most of us do not have a short URL as our primary domain name. This means you will need to register a new domain name that is much shorter than your current domain.

For example, when choosing a branded shorter domain for WPBeginner.com we registered WPBeg.in. This made our short URL 6 characters shorter than our primary domain.

Once you have found a domain name that meets your needs and is available, you can register it on GoDaddy or Namecheap.

The cost of domain name registration depends on which TLD you select. Country specific TLDs cost a little more than some other new TLDs.

Once you have registered your domain name, you will be able to manage it from your domain registrar’s control panel.

Step 2: Setup Your Custom Domain in Bitly

Bitly is a popular URL shortner service that allows you to manage and track links. We use it to shorten our WordPress URLs and manage them.

First you will need to create a Bitly account and then click on account settings.

On the settings menu you need to select Advanced Settings » Branded Short Domains and then add your custom short domain.

You will see instructions on how to setup your DNS A records and point them to Bitly servers. Below that you can just add your branded domain name.

Now before you can click verify, you need to set up DNS records.

Step 3: Set DNS A Record to Point to Bit.ly

Go to the domain management area of on your domain registrar’s website and look for DNS records. If you took our advice and registered your domain with GoDaddy, then you will find it under Domains.

Add the IP Addresses you copied from Bitly website as A records under DNS.

If you are using a subdomain for example on.wsj.com, then you need to set a CNAME record and point it to cname.bitly.com

After adding DNS records you can return to Bitly website and click on the verify button. If you see an error, then wait couple of hours and then try again.

Step 4: Set up Short URL on Your WordPress Site

The best part about using Bitly is that you can easily manage, share, and track your short URLs directly from your WordPress site.

First, thing you need to do is install and activate the WP Bitly plugin. For more details, see our step by step guide on how to install a WordPress plugin.

Upon activation, you need to visit Settings » Writing page and scroll down to the ‘WP Bitly Options’ section.

Here you will configure the plugin settings and connect Bitly to your WordPress site.

First you will need to provide an access token. You can find it by visiting your Bitly account and clicking on Settings » Advanced Settings. At the bottom of the menu, you will see a link to OAuth apps.

This will take you to a new page where you need to provide your Bitly password and then click on the Generate button.

Bitly will now generate an access token for you. You need to copy and paste it into the plugin’s settings page on your WordPress site.

Don’t forget to click on the save changes button to store your settings.

The plugin will now start generating your custom branded short URLs. You can see them by visiting your Bitly dashboard.

WP-Bitly plugin will also show you BitLy stats for each post. You can see those stats by editing a post and look for WP Bitly metabox.

This will allow you to track how many times your short URL for this post has been clicked and from which websites.
